BBC 'mocks' African leaders for going to China to beg for funds
African presidents in attendance with their wives include President Muhammadu Buhari, Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa; Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, president of Egypt, Edgar Lungu, president of Zambia, Ali Bongo, president of Gabon, George Weah, president of Liberia, among others.
At the conference, President of China, Xi Jinping, gave the African leaders $60,000,000,000 for various projects and cautioned that Chinese funds are not to be spent on “vanity projects” but in places that count the most.
According to Chinese officials, this year’s summit will strengthen Africa’s role in Xi’s Belt and Road initiative to link China by sea and land with Southeast and Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa through an infrastructure network modelled on the old Silk Road.
President Jinping said the plan, for which Beijing has pledged $126 billion, would help provide more resources and facilities for Africa and would expand shared markets.
However, many Africans are not happy with way the continent's leaders go about begging for funds from European, American countries, and now China.
The BBC Pidgin shared the above photo on Instagram with a caption that the discerning minds will know is a mockery to the continent and its leaders.
They wrote:
"See as African leaders hook-up for China.
.
Nearly all Africa kontri presidents tanda for Beijing on Monday to attend Forum on China-Africa Cooperation where China 🇨🇳 give dem $60,000,000,000 to take do project."
Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, also added his voice. He wondered why such conference can not be held in Africa. He also lambasted the leaders for 'signing their nations away'
He wrote:
"China and Africa are having a conference involving all African nations and just one nation (China). Yet it is African leaders that have to go to China. There are 54 nations in Africa. Why could the conference not hold in one of these African nations? Why did African nations have to go and smile sheepishly as they signed their nations away? Nigeria that just shared out $322 million Abacha loot to the poor yesterday signed a $328 million loan with China. How can China ever have respect for Africa?"
